To have your car topped up with petrol to run a generator or power convertor to watch TV for the News and charge your cellphones. 

To have tin food, noodles in a cup, cup of soups, rice risotto, pasta for one, milk powder etc...  

To have heaps of bottled water to drink and wash your clothes by hand.

To have gas in your BBQ cylinder to cook the meat in your freezer before it goes off, as you have no power.

To have an old bucket to drill holes in to have a luke warm shower.

To have a torch available at hand when a earthquake happens at night.

To have candles for night time lighting with a lighter not matches, don't be tempted to use your torches.

To have an old chair with the bottom cut out as you will need an Out House in the back garden.

To have a getaway bag ready at the door, for when an earthquake happens in the middle of the night. 

To have a data stick for the computer as the internet will be down.

To have buckets and containers to catch the rain water.

To have plenty of rest or sleep during the day, as the night time aftershocks will keep you awake.
